A new generation of mental health hospitals
Mersey Care is a large mental health trust. Our inpatient, community and administrative services are currently provided from 73 buildings across 30 sites.
We aim to provide perfect care and an important part of this is providing our services in buildings with facilities that are comfortable, modern and support people towards recovery.
Our ambitious five year estates plan means that by 2018 everyone who uses our services will be cared for in new or refurbished buildings; people who need to be admitted will stay in a single bedroom with an ensuite bathroom.
We value our staff and our plan includes refurbishing or renewing all the buildings in which they work. We are proud to be the first NHS organisation in the country to gain the Royal Institute of Surveyors SKA Gold award for the sustainable fit out of our trust offices in Prescot. The award criteria includes over 100 good practice measures covering, energy, CO2 emissions, waste, water, materials, pollution, wellbeing and transport.

An artist’s impression
The new facility would offer innovative treatments to improve recovery times for people with mental health and learning disability issues.
It is envisaged that the new development, planned for the Ashworth Hospital site, would help to ensure high quality care in a modern environment for people who need it.
We invite people to come along to a series of drop-ins so they can view our proposals in more detail.
Southport News
Our public consultations into a new mental health hospital in Southport earlier this year received overwhelming support – paving the way for further progress.
We have now submitted a planning application for our new-build in Southport, pictured below, to Sefton Council’s Planning Department. We hope we can soon forge ahead with redeveloping our existing site at the Boothroyd Unit off Scarisbrick New Road into a purpose-built modern hospital fit for the 21st Century.
