Our second national lead is Penny Smith from the CAMHS Eating Disorders Team at Herts. Partnership NHS University Foundation Hospital, who will be leading our well developed group on eating disorders services.
She qualified as a mental health nurse in 2004. After watching the ‘Karen Carpenter Story’ when she was 12 and feeling very upset that someone had lost their life to an illness like anorexia she knew that Eating Disorders was the field she wanted to work in. During her training she therefore opted to have placements on an inpatient unit for adolescents with eating disorders and at the same worked as a health care assistant on an adult eating disorders unit. When she qualified she was advised to get some general mental health experience under her belt before specialising, however;she was certain of the field she was choosing and therefore opted to start work as a newly qualified staff nurse on an inpatient unit for adolescents with eating disorders. She worked at the same unit for 6 years, working her way up to deputy ward manager. Hertfordshire Partnership Foundation Trust created a camhs community eating disorders service and she has worked there for 6 years.
