Our Trust is delighted to announce the appointment of our new Chairman, following an extensive recruitment process.
Dr Ian McPherson, a clinical psychologist by background, will join us on 1st March 2017 and will Chair both the Board of Directors and Council of Governors. Ian brings a wealth of experience to the Trust through previous clinical, managerial and policy implementation roles, having held several high profile positions working across health and social care. These include being the Director of the National Mental Health Development Unit and Director of the National Institute for Mental Health in England between 2002 and 2011. Prior to this he had been Director of Mental Health in two NHS Trusts for nine years; having previously held clinical and academic roles for 13 years.
Speaking of his appointment, Ian said: “I am delighted to have been appointed as Chairman of Surrey and Borders Partnership. I was attracted to this post for a wide variety of reasons, not least the Trust’s reputation for innovation, high performance and staff satisfaction. However, just as important is its reputation for strong leadership and values and its commitment to work with other partners to improve the mental health and wellbeing of the wider population, as well those who currently use the Trust’s services.
“In these challenging times for the NHS it is important that we remain focused on our key role and continually ask ourselves: ‘Are we providing services that could be used with confidence by our families, our friends and ourselves?’”
After leaving full-time employment, Ian spent six years as a Non-Executive Director at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust where he was also Vice Chair. He also spent this time as a Trustee of the Centre for Mental Health, the Mental Health Providers Forum and of the International Initiative for Mental Health Leadership.
He was awarded the OBE for Services to Mental Health in 2012.
Our Chief Executive, Fiona Edwards, said: “We are delighted to welcome Ian to the Trust as our new Chairman. He has a truly impressive resume and his vast experience in leadership, as well as clinical expertise, will benefit the people we serve greatly.
“Ian joins us at a period of development and innovation at Surrey and Borders Partnership, and I look forward to working with him closely as we continue to drive our Trust forward and deliver modern, high quality services to residents of Surrey and North East Hampshire.”
Our current Chairmain, Richard Greenhalgh, will be stepping down in February after 6 years with the Trust. We would like to thank Richard for the commitment and expertise that he brought to the role since joining in 2011.
