After several weeks of refurbishment, the new Place of Safety suite (PoS) has opened at
The Cedars in Exeter. The renovation work has cost around £190k and was made possible by national funding.
Commenting on the opening of the new facility, Director of Nursing and Practice, Paul Keedwell, said: “The new PoS looks fantastic and is a significant improvement on what we had before. As well as having a bright, modern feel to it, the new PoS can accommodate two people, instead of just one. In due course, we aim to have a centralised PoS facility for the county and we are talking with our commissioners about securing the funding to staff the service on a 24/7 basis. For the time being, though, this is a big step forward in terms of the quality of care and support that we are able to offer people, at a time when they are often feeling very distressed and unwell.
“We have worked incredibly hard with our police colleagues over recent years and our latest data shows that we have made huge strides forward in terms of where we assess people who are detained by the police under s136 of the Mental Health Act. In 2012/13, 74% of people were detained in police custody – which is generally the least appropriate place to conduct an assessment of someone appearing to have urgent mental health needs. In 2017/18, just 2% of people picked-up under s136 were detained in police custody – which is a real achievement.
Present at the formal opening of the new PoS were Karen Turner, NHS England’s Director of Mental Health, and Mark Collins, the Police Commissioner for England and Wales – both of whom were visiting Devon Partnership NHS Trust this week to talk about the benefits of closer working with colleagues from the police. They were joined by Sharon Taylor, Deputy Chief Constable of the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary, Chair Julie Dent, Chief Executive Melanie Walker and members of our senior team and The Cedars team.
