Fran Cairns is out Joint Lead for Learning Disabilities. She is the Head of Occupational Therapy at Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust and is passionate about social inclusion and equal opportunities for people with learning disabilities and ensuring people with learning disabilities receive the right care, at the right time, in the right place.
Fran is part of a senior operational team in the Trust that is developing a new clinical model for people with learning disability based on ‘Transforming Care’ and ‘Building the Right Support’. She has worked closely with service users and ensured they are central to the design of the new model.
Fran graduated from the University of Salford in 2009 with a degree in Occupational Therapy. In 2015, Fran gained her Masters in Professional Practice (Organisational Change) after studying part-time at the University of Lancaster whilst within her current role.
Fran has worked as an Occupational Therapist in the NHS since 2009 and within forensic services since 2010.
Over the last four years, Fran has worked within a forensic learning disability Trust developing a new Occupational Therapy service to ensure individuals are engaged in meaningful occupations providing educational, vocational and creative opportunities to develop skills which maximise independence, incorporating skills for daily life and physical health.
Fran’s approach has ensured that people who use the service have access to mainstream services such as colleges and access to meaningful employment. She has developed and opened ‘Our Shared College’ which was co-produced with service users and continues to drive social inclusion activities that are developed in partnership with people who use the service.
Fran is the lead for Patient Experience in the Trust and is driven to ensure continual improvement in satisfaction. She is passionate about ensuring service users are supported to lead their care and make meaningful choices that enhance their lives. Her current role within the senior operational team ensures accountability for the delivery of the operational service, the Occupational Therapy service and patient experience at Calderstones.
In her spare time Fran enjoys going to the gym.
