Our Special Interest Group on Suicide Prevention/Zero Suicide is jointly led. Our first lead for this group is Emma Wadey, Director of Nursing Standards and Safety at Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. Our Joint Lead for this work is Dr Rebeca Martinez, Associate Medical Director for Suicide Prevention, Mersey Care NHS Trust.
I am an extremely enthusiastic and motivated nurse with a true passion for innovation in Nursing. I have nearly 20 years Mental Health Nursing experience. I started my nursing career as a nursing assistant in dementia services and have since had the good fortune to work within Community Mental Health Teams, Assertive Outreach, Rehabilitation and Recovery, Substance Misuse, Dual Diagnosis, Prison, Acute Care and High Secure Personality Disorder services. Clinically I am an accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist with a special interest in the treatment of childhood trauma and PTSD. Additionally I am particularly dedicated to the prevention of suicide, service user and carer engagement and the maintenance of therapeutic boundaries within nursing.
Patient safety is core to my role and at Sussex I have developed several initiatives in collaboration with my peers and other stakeholders. This year I & Grassroots won the Nursing Times Patient safety award for IT for the development of a suicide prevention app. Other projects have included Peer & patient safety reviews, information sharing with network rail and British transport police to reduce deaths on railway lines and a non-healthcare based place of safety. Currently I am undertaking a PhD to understand the experience of parents who have been bereaved by suicide.
In my spare time I’m a keen runner, parkrun volunteer, shoe shopper, nagging mum and housework dodger!
